AUSFEST

Australian Independent Music Festival

NEW HOME IN 2015
CANBERRA

Next Festival @ 9 – 11 January 2015

AusFest is Australia’s preeminent independent music festival with associated dance, comedy and arts set over 3 days across multiple venues in a host city location. 2013 sees Canberra-Queanbeyan as the location of this feast of entertainment, competition and industry networking. With onsite camping, marquees and workshops this year makes for a great weekend featuring some legends and emerging Indie artists.

Do You Remember:

  • Woodstock and all the Indie acts that became household names? (you must be getting old).
  • Sunbury when local Indie performers answered the flood of foreign artists with Australia’s first huge outdoor festival with only Australian acts performing? (then maybe you weren’t there).
  • Big Day Out when it was truly only local Indies and no fat pay checks for the big label or foreign acts? (then maybe you no longer listen to or work @ Triple J – sad, but true – sorry “JJJ Unearthed” still doesn’t excuse Major labels’ high rotation spins on nationwide public funded radio when these Majors already get 90% of airplay on commercial FM radio!)

As this is a true Indie music festival no performers signed to the Major labels and their subsidiaries (EMI. Sony BMG, Universal + Warner) can perform under their contracted band name. Members of these acts may attend, jam or play with a psedonym on the same level as all the Indie artists but get no payments.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?

The Festival is an initiative of the Australian Independent Music Association (AIMA) in recognition of the diversity and range of talent active in the production of independent music. It is not owned or controlled by any sponsors or major labels in any way, although we do welcome financial and inkind assistance to make the festival reality.

For us it is all about the music! The majority of personnel involved in the Festival are volunteers who support independent music – the “True Believers” who live for the music. We encourage those who support indpendent music to actively participate and join AIMA

INSPIRATION QUOTES

” Desire – Inspire – Believe – Make It Happen!” AusFest theme

“The special thing about Sunbury is that there are only Australian bands and yet there is 35,000 here.” Molly Meldrum @ Sunbury’72

“You don’t need overseas bands. That’s the whole point. The only way to promote Australian bands is to use only Australian bands.”Billy Thorpe interviewed by Molly Meldrum @ Sunbury’72

“I’m proud I’ve never had any drug problems and complained that fame sucks and shot myself in the head like Kurt Kobaine” Chuck Schuldiner (father of death metal)

“You can’t compute or calculate the chemistry that arises when you put together a band…. No one knows until you start working together.” Jimmy Page

“My chops were not as fast…. I just leaned more on what was in my mind than what was in my chops. I learned a long time ago that one note can go a long way if it’s the right one, and it will probably whip the guy with twenty notes.” Les Paul

“Differences of opinion are part of collaborating with another human being. But music is not a competitive thing. I don’t want to deal with someone who’s in competition with me, I want to work together and make music.” Edward Van Halen

“I like to play with people who can play simple and are not threatened by other musicians thinking they can’t play. And that eliminates 99 percent of the musicians.” Neil Young

“I’ve played more than I care to remember in all types of situations. And yet there are probably 12 guitar riffs that I use that always work” Sean Hale

“The days of Indie artists are numbered as we have the airwaves under our control and we’re not gonna let it go. We know what the public want and by hell we’ve got the music factory to make and give it.” CEO of which major label???? (3 guesses)

“Yeah right, who are these suits that keep telling us it can’t be done?” Bob Geldof

By the way, you should check out Soame Chopra in Newcastle because he is one of the best Australian comics I have seen!
